Isabelle Toh
Dragon Boat Nicknames:
Izzy
Occupation:
Student
Country of Birth:
Malaysia
When was my first Dragon Boat Experience:
2012 - drumming for a corporate Malaysian team at an annual dragon boat festival in Brisbane. "Put the kiddo on the dragon head, she won’t weigh down the rest of the boat!" I can’t believe it’s been 8 years.
Did I participate in Dragon Boat elsewhere, prior to joining a DBV club?
Yes, I paddled with the Brisbane River Dragons for 3-4 years, as well as a couple of sessions with the Queensland Sonics. My sister and I also went on to stroke for that Malaysian team.
How I found out about Dragon Boat:
My sister started first, and eventually we joined BRD together.
My current Dragon Boat club:
Melbourne Uni Dragon Boat Club (go MUDS!)
Something that my club doesn’t already know about me?
I can’t run. At all. My beep test scores are embarrassing. I can get the perg going full steam, but just don’t make me run.
Type of music I listen to.
Rock. Oldies. Blues. Everything. Current obsession: listening to Queens of the Stone Age during TK1 sessions (*before lockdown).
My favourite seat row(s) or Drummer, Sweep
Seat two, or stroke when I’m feeling frisky.
Personal paddling achievements:
A perfect dragon boat tug-of-war record, and no accidental capsizes (yet). Also a couple of medals here and there from Queensland regattas!
My memorable paddling moments:
The first time I raced with the BRD prems - after a perfect quick 15 start, it felt like we were flying above the water.
Sports I did before I become a Dragon Boat member:
Basketball – I still love to play it today.
My favourite quote for Dragon Boating:
“Get your glutes in the boat!”
If I could choose one superpower what would it be and why?
Teleportation: free travel with no lead time. Maybe I could teleport the boats from the hub to the water too.
My words of advice for new comers?
Don’t be scared to try dragon boating out! Paddlers are super friendly, and your team will quickly become family.
How would I promote Dragon Boat to my best buddy?
It’s like rowing, but a thousand times cooler, and nothing like rowing.
My future expectation about this sport:
Hopefully one day the first response to “I’m a dragon boater” isn’t “a what?”
