Victorian Championships - Update #2
Published Tue 25 Feb 2025
Blue Green Algae (BGA) was detected above trigger levels within the National Water Sports Centre waterway and it was closed indefinitely last week.
Two clear test readings at least seven days apart are required for the waterway to re-open.
The reduction of BGA to acceptable levels is unpredictable and is influenced by – temperature, rainfall and runoff.
This means that we need to start looking at a number of different scenarios and preferences, priorities and risks to conduct a championship will evolve as we get closer to the scheduled date.
We will monitor the weekly tests to better understand the likelihood of the venue being re-opened for the scheduled dates or the back-up date.
We have also started work with Parks Victoria and others to identify alternative venues and consider their suitability and the trade-offs they involve.
We are working on developing the options this week, it is too early to abandon the possibility of proceeding at the NWSC as scheduled, but clubs should start thinking about the possibility that the date, venue or schedule for Vic Champs may change.
Although Revsport was set up to accept entries from this morning, we have postponed entry opening until we know more.
