Lunar New Year
Published Sat 01 Feb 2025
Lunar New Year Regatta.
Due to evolving priorities with the City of Melbourne, the Lantern Festival is not being funded for our event, so we are concentrating on the regatta aspects.
With 3 Peisheng boats based at the Footscray hub, we will transport them (by water) to the Docklands to build 3 fleets of 4 boats and the race schedule will be built to facilitate:
- 1 Fleet racing
- 1 Fleet ready to race, and
- 1 Fleet re-loading
RACE SCHEDULING
All races will be 200m.
There are many views on the optimal regatta format, and this year it has been adjusted to recognise and partly balance the competing demands on paddlers in all aspects of their lives. Some want to race all weekend; others need to juggle it with work and family responsibilities.
SATURDAY
Corporate - After the Australian Corporate Games (ACG) were blown out in November we re-scheduled to LNY and have 5 teams preparing with a 6th working on the logistics of competing. Any corporate teams can enter and the ACG teams will compete in a sub-division of all corporate teams for their medals.
BCP – 10s and 20s racing is combined on the Saturday, weaved into the program to facilitate recovery. 20s racing is a critical aspect for the BCP cohort and where necessary paddlers will be shared to facilitate a great competition.
ACP - 10s and 20s racing is combined on the Saturday and this a wonderful format where composite teams come together with great camaraderie.
Newbies – Remember your first race? – This is a popular introduction to racing with a chilled, yet serious vibe. This is all about getting racing experience with support from experienced paddlers.
Super Teams – A new initiative for LNY, this builds on the concept of Cross Border to allow clubs and friends to come together to step it up and build their dream team. This is really free paddling with simple categories
- Super Open 20s is the chance to optimise the boat to the fullest extent – no gender, age or club restrictions.
- Super Women 10s is showcasing what these girls can do, no age or club restrictions, this racing is not one to miss.
VIC25 – Each VIC25 category has it’s own training and development plan and we may have missed the boat this year, but VIC25 teams can get more racing together as a team or by combining squads if that suits the coaches’ and teams plans. VIC25 teams will make individual choices about entering their squads in the Super Teams category.
Universities – We’re looking at this a bit differently, informed by the concept that if you don’t have a go, you’ll never know.
Rather than restricting this to current students, we’ve seen the thriving communities of past and present students combine in other sporting competitions and we think that would be great to have in Dragon Boating.
Therefore, subject to take up we’ll run a subdivision of Super Teams with a Universities category.
Paddlers will be able to compete in Universities Super Teams and another Super Team – You don’t have to choose.
SUNDAY
This has the feel of a ‘Clubs day’.
- 20s - Prem & Seniors - Mixed, Open and Women
- 10s - Prem & Seniors - Mixed, Open and Women
This is a great lead in for clubs heading to the Vic Champs and we’re applying standard Vic By-laws.
Those only racing on the Sunday will be charged the standard 1 day regatta fee of $45 per paddler or $22.50 per junior/student.
We’re looking forward to great weekend and we’re excited to see how we can optimise the emerging racing categories.
